Your Tire Counts

The Automobile Club of Southern California has recently stated that as long as your vehicle has tires that are in good working condition, you would be able to have a good fuel economy and extend the life of your vehicle as well. This is in accordance and with regards to the National Tire Safety Week which started just last April 23rd and would be continuing at the end of this week.

The National Tire Safety Week was launched so as to assist drivers in understanding the basic tire care. Aside from this, the fact remains that there is still that need for proper tire maintenance. From researches done, the statistics have shown that around 85 percent of drivers do not actually check their vehicle’s tire pressure properly.

Engineer Steve Mazor who is the Auto Club’s principal automotive engineer states, “Not knowing the condition of your vehicle’s tires is equal to pouring money down the drain. Proper tire inflation is necessary to for safe driving and to reduce gas costs.” He continues, “Under inflated tires can cut fuel economy by up to two percent per pound of pressure below the recommended level. During every fill up, motorists should walk around their vehicles and check tires for uneven or excessive tread wear and proper inflation. Drivers can refer to their vehicle’s doorjamb or glove box for original specifications or the manufacturer of the replacement tire for tire pressure inflation.”

As per statistics that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has, nearly one out of every three vehicles on the roads and highways has a significant under inflated tire. Aside from this fact is that there are some 600 fatalities and around 33,000 injuries that happen every year. These are results of low tire pressure related crashes.

The Importance of Car Information

You recall your first car? Was it a hunk of junk or a nice one? You may have resorted to the local newspaper for your car information in order to find that inexpensive, little jalopy. Or perhaps you were lucky enough to receive one is the gift or be able to afford one yourself. No matter where you searched, one thing was for sure; you wanted a good deal. In the past, this could often prove a difficult task. If it was bought from a dealer, he could make up any outrageous price that he wanted to, and if you went to an individual that had a car for sale you could end up with a junker and not know it until a month later and then you would be totally out of luck. This is really that big of a deal now a days. A deluge of car information is at your fingertips online.

I still remember my first car like it was yesterday. It was a 1978 Fiat Spider convertible. I got it from a college kid for $1100. It was a pretty decent first car. I mean I wasn't expecting a Porsche for $1100. It was one of those cars that you couldn't just let sit around not using it. You had to start everyday so it would turn over when you took it out for a spin. I recall one instance where I had not started it for three consecutive days. Big mistake, but fortunately I could always pop the clutch. While this wasn't the greatest car in the the universe, I definitely knew one thing, the seller provided all necessary car information upon my test drive so there wasn't any confusion. He has all the paperwork in order including service and maintenance records. It would be nice if everyone was as prepared.

If you're heading out to a dealership to find that new family van, or sports car, it's always a good idea to do your homework online first. The Internet is a vast reservoir of knowledge and information. It truly is a priceless resource. The car information online will save you plenty of like work. You know that you want a safe vehicle, and you know you want to avoid getting ripped off. Well, with the car information found on the World Wide Web, your worries should be subsided. The dealers no longer have the upper hand, that now belongs to us, the consumer. But the advantage is only hours if we choose to use it.

When you step into that dealership, you know what the vehicle sells for. The Internet will prevent you from being ripped off by exorbitant pricing. With your PC you can check out the numerous car sites in your area to see who's offering what. There are even online sales that can be found on auctions such as Ebay and other state and federal auction sites run by government agencies. The buyer is now the one in charge when purchasing that new car. With car information so accessible, finding that ride of your dreams is a synch.

The Whiplash Injury As Of Early 2005

In late 2004 it was discovered that the delay in the onset of WHIPLASH-TYPE injuries was discovered to be the "Normal" rather than the "Exception" .

It was found that 10% of the victims of "Whiplash" became totally disabled so it simply followed that the "Pain and Suffering" they endured could become monumental.

It also learned that several million Americans suffered a "Whiplash-Type" of injury because of a motor vehicle accident in that year.

CAN A SOFT TISSUE INJURY LIKE WHIPLASH HEAL ITSELF? The answer to that one is not a simple "Yes" or "No" because, while it can heal itself, it can do so imperfectly !

In one study, it was determined that patients who had suffered a "Whiplash-Type" of injury that over 50% of them developed Osteoarithritis in the ensuing years. In another study patients were interviewed more than two years following the settlement of their cases and, without proper care, almost 50% of them continued to complain of ongoing pain (in the area of their neck and/or shoulders) which were determined to be directly related to their accident.

"SO - - WHAT TO DO"? The answer to that is very simple, "You must complain and complain to whomever is treating you".

Don't allow yourself to be conned with something like, "Yeah, I'm sorry, I know it hurts but just wait awhile. It'll go away". That's a hogwash of an answer !

A "Whiplash" hurls our head violently backward and forward, injuring your neck. Whiplash can cause injury to intervertebral joints, discs, and ligaments, cervical muscles and nerves. It is usually encountered with concussions and more serious injury. The effects of whiplash can be short term or life long, and it can leave your neck forever vulnerable to injury.

TIME NEEDED TO RECOVER: 45% of the victims remained symptomatic for 3 months and 25% remained in that same state for 6 months! The most minor cases needed a minimum of 8 weeks to recover. Some took as long as 17 weeks.

AND SO, THE OFTEN DECLARED NOTION, BY INSURANCE ADJUSTERS, THAT "WHIPLASH INJURIES HEAL IN 6 TO 8 WEEKS", is absolutely not true !

AS OF LATE 2004 THE FOLLOWING ARE THREE SOLID AND PROVE ABLE "CRASH FACTS": #1. Many injuries occur at speeds below 12 MPH. #2. Rear end impacts of 6 MPH to 10 MPH can positively cause a "Whiplash-Type" injury. #3. Post Injury crash facts have proved that, between 1 and 2 years after impact, 22% of many patients have not returned back to "Normal" - - plus their "Pain & Suffering" continued on and on!

5 OF THE MOST COMMON UNTRUTHS (ESPECIALLY AS APPLIED TO "WHIPLASH") ARE AS FOLLOWS:

#1. Low speed impact crashes don't cause injuries. #2. Injuries generally heal in 6 to 12 weeks. #3. A patients pre-injury psychological makeup affects recovery. #4. The greater the vehicle damage the greater the occupant injury. #5. An "Accident Re-Constructionist" can predict injury potential.

All five of the above "Conclusions" have been proven to be totally incorrect !

The Search For That Elusive Classic Car

There are some people who do love to collect cars especially those classics. One of the more famous celebrities who do own a great deal of vehicles – classic or not – is Jay Leno and he has around hundreds of these vehicles in his garage, or collection. You, too, can have and start your n clear terms what various cars in various conditions are really worth. You sown collection of vehicles if you do have that much money to spare. After all, you would want to have a vehicle in your collection that not only looks good but also performs and runs well too.

Classic cars are one of the most famous units that are included in car collections. If you would like to have a classic car, it is best if you know how to choose a classic that is worth buying. Knowledge could be taken from a value guide which you can buy in auto stores and some book stores. These value guides actually provide you iee, two models which are similar could be worth different values.

While looking at a possible buy, consider the condition of the vehicle. Generally, these cars are rated with the scale of 1 to 5. 1 is the best condition and is includes vehicles that are the ideal car show entrants. Those that are in condition 2 could be those at car shows. As per conditions 3 and 4, they are mostly those that are constantly pampered and taken cared of. A car in condition 5 may not be drivable at all. It is important that you know these terms.

Remember that the more original parts that your vehicle has, the higher the price it will be. If the car has gone through customization like paint, carpet, wheels, engines, and grilles, the value of that car is much less compared to a car of the same model which has not yet felt any kind of customization. Rarity is also to be considered. Another factor is the color of the vehicle. You see, a red Ferrari would always sell higher compared to a brown Ferrari. So think about that.

Why Rear Facing Child Safety Seats Are Safest

What is the safest, a forward or rear facing child safety seat? Everyone has a different answer on this and many states have different laws governing the age, weight or size of the child or infant in question. By looking at and interpreting car accident reports and data it is an obvious finding that the severity of accidents were reportedly lower when a rear facing child safety seat was used properly.

It is important to say when used properly here as data from fire department personnel through the years shows upwards of 50% of child safety seats are not properly installed. This could be as simple as the belt tensioner not being pulled tight enough, but there have been instances where the child was sitting on top of the restraints (the restraints were only protecting the seat in this instance and not the child). The latest most famous instance of abuse of child safety seat laws is Britney Spears driving with her child in her lap. There is a lot of literature available on how to properly install and adjust a child safety seat, but more needs to be done to reduce unnecessary injuries due to improperly installed child safety seats.

Even though any child safety seat is better than none, a rear facing seat is especially important for babies and small children as they can face the highest risks of paralysis and permanent injury. Babies and small children are at risk for more severe spinal cord and brain and neck injuries as their muscles are weaker and their head weighs significantly more in proportion to the rest of their body. This increases the extent and severity of whiplash injuries. According to the National Institute for Highway Safety:

Rear-facing car seats spread frontal crash forces over the whole area of the babys back, head and neck; they also prevent the head from snapping relative to the body in a frontal crash.

So, it is obvious that we should use a rear facing child safety seat for as long as feasible and as required by our state and federal driving laws. It is important to note that regardless of the child safety seat used, not all injuries can be prevented. Unfortunately some crashes are unavoidable and unsurvivable. Still, we can do much to increase our chances of survival for our children by properly installing the child safety seats. It is a good idea to stop by your local fire department and have them look at your child safety seats. They are trained to know exactly what is and is not safe in these safety seats and its free. Besides, kids love firemen and fire engines, they will have fun and you will feel better about their safety.

Buy the Right Car, Save a Polar Bear

A recent series of news stories suggests that polar ice caps are melting "faster than expected," and that this phenomenon may result in the extinction of one of humanity's favorite animals, the polar bear. Apparently polar bears need to be able to migrate onto the ice to fish for food, and this shift in climate is already beginning to interrupt their ability to feed themselves.

Most rational scientists believe this shift in arctic climate is due to global warming resulting from the greenhouse effect, which is produced largely by automotive emissions. While some scientists are speculating that it may be too late to reverse the trend of global warming, at least in the short run, others believe that we need to do something drastic - now - to avoid environmental disaster.

Internal combustion engines are the big culprit here; they emit a variety of gasses into the air as they burn fuel, including carbon dioxide, one of the main causes of the greenhouse effect. Two automobile manufacturers, Toyota and Honda, have created gas-electric hybrid vehicles - the Prius by Toyota, at this point the top-rated hybrid designed to have the lowest emissions, and several designs by Honda, including the newly engineered Honda Civic - smarter, sexier, more fuel-efficient, and with lower emissions, than its earlier versions. Ford offers a hybrid SUV in its new Escape, and even Lexus has come out with a luxury hybrid.

Many cars on the market today can burn a gasoline-ethanol blend, which can lower emissions. As a matter of fact, any gasoline-powered vehicle can tolerate blends of up to 10 percent ethanol, while many can use E85, an ethanol - gasoline blend containing 85 percent ethanol. The Dodge Caravan and the Chrysler Sebring are only two of many current model cars on the market which can burn E85.

One problem is that ethanol, particularly E85, is not readily available everywhere. Additionally, some critics have dismissed ethanol as impractical, claiming that ethanol requires more energy to create than it produces. As global political and environmental concerns heighten the demand for alternatives to petroleum-based fuels, scientists will continue to work on more efficient ways of producing ethanol.

Diesel cars can run on biodiesel, a combination of regular diesel fuel and vegetable oil - based fuel; some cars are being run on D100, which is 100 percent vegetable oil. Two concerns with biodiesel are, again, availability, and the emissions of nitrogen oxide, another culprit in the greenhouse effect. While biodiesel is promising, and has the added benefit of reducing dependence on foreign oil, any real effort to make biodiesel cars more popular will have to come with much stricter emissions standards which greatly reduce nitrogen oxide content.

An interesting irony is that the EPA's mileage standards, while having been criticized as inaccurate, are actually a good way to gauge automobile emissions. That is because the EPA actually measures the emissions exiting the vehicle as a way to gauge automobile mileage. While a high MPG rating may not necessarily be accurate in terms of your gasoline usage, it's actually a pretty good way to choose a car with lower emissions.

Global warming endangers more than polar bears; as the polar ice caps melt, the temperature of the oceans rises along with the sea level. Warmer ocean temperatures fuel hurricanes, making level three, four, five and hurricanes more frequent. And many millions of people, in Micronesia, Southeast Asia, and around the world live in areas literally inches above sea level; their habitat, and possibly their lives, are threatened by the rise in sea level accompanying global warming. While driving a car with low gas emissions isn't going to completely solve the problem of global warming, it's a contribution that any consumer shopping for a new car can decide to make.
